Gastropods, like the Helix Aspersa snails, are part of the phylum of mollusks, creatures without a backbone. Gastropod means foot-stomach.
They are animals capable of inhabiting almost all terrestrial habitats and have existed for half a billion years. They represent 80% of mollusks and have survived several mass extinctions. There are 35,000 species of terrestrial snails studied and many thousands more to study, especially microscopic ones. They are hermaphrodites and have an incredible courtship and mating ritual.
Some data: they have 33 teeth for 80 rows = 2640 teeth that form a ribbon (radula) bent towards the inside that clings tightly to food. The first row of teeth wears out and is replaced, moving the radula forward: it breathes through the skin and an orifice under the head. They have expressive tentacles, 1 lung, 1 heart, 1 gastrointestinal system, 1 internal water tank, two pairs of tentacles. The long ones have eyes but their sense of sight is not as developed as their sense of smell. They are able to identify, alone among terrestrial animals, the calcium needed to build their shell. They distinguish salty from sweet and bitter with the lower tentacles responsible for taste. They rely on the three senses: smell, taste, touch. They DO NOT FEEL and orient themselves based on light and shadows.
They are almost all right-handed based on the direction of growth of the shell. With an opening on the right. They must find a mate with the same spiral. If it breaks within a few days they can repair it with a particular mucus. They can produce various types depending on their needs: walking, mating, wounds, protection of eggs, etc.
The slime is the viscous essence of the soul of gastropods.
My snails fascinated me with the luminescence of their mucus with which I created these traces/embroideries/typography/writings on various bases and on which they remain for years.
